Laser engraving photos in wood
The combination of modern laser technology and natural wood creates something very special: personalized engravings that capture photos in detail and permanently on wood surfaces. Whether as a gift, decoration, or memory – photo engraving on wood is becoming increasingly popular. But how does it actually work?
What does "lasering photos into wood" mean?
When lasering a photo, a laser beam processes the surface of the wood so that an image is created. The laser burns or removes minimal material – depending on how light or dark the image areas are. The fine differences in the photo are simulated by different intensities of the laser. The result is a high-contrast, permanently burned image of the photo on wood.

This is how the photo is prepared
A photo usually cannot be lasered directly – it must be specially prepared. First, it is converted into a black-and-white or grayscale image. Since the laser cannot produce true gray tones, a so-called Dithering process used: Here, the grayscale is created by fine dots or grids, similar to a newspaper photo.
Especially important are good contrast, clear contours, and high image quality. Images that are too dark or detailed are less suitable because fine nuances can be lost in the wood.
Which types of wood are best suited?
Not every wood delivers good engraving results. Light, evenly grained woods produce the best contrasts. These include:
-
Sycamore – very light, hardly any grain, ideal for fine details
-
Birkensperrholz – similar to Sycamore, also very suitable
-
Pappelsperrholz – soft and uniform, inexpensive and easy to engrave
- Buchensperrholz – light, very fine and uniform structure, very suitable for engravings
-
Pear – fine-pored, uniform structure, warm-toned, delivers precise and elegant engravings
-
Hornwood – very dense and hard, with fine texture, produces high-contrast and detailed engravings at higher laser power
Post-processing and refinement
After laser engraving, fine soot residues may remain on the surface. These can be carefully cleaned with a damp cloth or some isopropanol. For a noble appearance and to protect the engraving, sealing with wood oil or a clear varnish is recommended. This enhances the contrasts and keeps the wood beautifully durable.

Unique gifts with personality
Whether the wedding photo on a tree slice, a family portrait on a wooden board, or the pet on a keychain – photo engraving on wood is a real eye-catcher and a creative way to capture memories. Each piece becomes unique through the natural grain of the wood.
In summary
Laser engraving photos into wood combines modern technology with traditional material. With some preparation and the right wood, artistic engravings with emotional value are created. A photo engraving is not only a beautiful gift but also a lasting keepsake – durable, natural, and individual.
